Unapproachable Girl Summer

It was only natural that after years of #cleangirl aesthetics, people would flock to the polar opposite. Heavy make-up, unconventional outfits, bleached eyebrows, bold and contrasting colours - it’s 2024, and we’re embracing the beautiful chaos that makes us, us. We’re tired of looking “pretty” and “nice”, it’s time to be hot, loud, and proud of it.

It’s so obvious, I’m
your number one
On one end of the spectrum, there’s Charli XCX, bringing hot mess back into our dictionaries. The BRAT era has her partying all night every night in heavy eyeshadow and the miniest of minis, yet she’s not at the club for anyone else but herself. Taking a hint from the music videos for “Von Dutch” and “360”, getting in her way could turn real violent real fast, so it’s probably best to stay away and let her do her own thing.
BRAT is bringing back the movement of knowing you look sexy and using it to your advantage. The hashtag #unapproachablemakeup sees looks heavy on eyeliner and bold lips, styles often proclaimed to be “too much” by societal standards. In other words, perfect for avoiding unwelcome gazes, so that you can forget about the world and finally let loose.
Pretty and tacky. Or, just tacky.
On the other end of the spectrum, Miss Chappell Roan herself, taking the unapproachable movement and dialling it up to eleven. Her iconic outfits reject the boring and the expected, challenging the status quo via creative expression rooted in camp and clown-core. Chappell encourages people to experiment with self-expression in the pursuit of self-actualization, leaving societal expectations and pressure behind.
This movement was particularly strong during the pandemic, during which there was, frankly, nothing better to do. From shaving heads to blush overdose, people were free to take their appearance to the extremes. In the post-pandemic world, we see echoes of our past in the bright and elaborate eye make-up and colourful clothes, straying away from the conventions of what is and isn’t
attractive or flattering.
What matters is being authentic and having fun, even if it might cause some people to do a double-take when
they see you.
There is nothing that scares away unwanted attention more than being confident, so put on your brattiest outfit, pair it with a matching attitude, and run, be free!
