Loie's Music: Beyond Empowerment Anthems - How Does She Connect with a Diverse Audience, Including the LGBTQ+ Community?

My music definitely resonates with a strong female audience. But what's been truly rewarding is seeing it connect with the LGBTQ+ community as well. The themes of liberation and self-expression, of finally breaking free from repression, seem to strike a chord with them in a way I hadn't anticipated. Ultimately, these are universal themes—the desire to be authentically you—and that's what allows my music to connect with such a diverse audience.

Lizzo is a total powerhouse! I admire her for so many reasons. First, her mastery of the flute is incredible—it's not an instrument you see very often in pop music, and she makes it sing. But what truly inspires me is her authenticity. In a social media world obsessed with perfection, Lizzo embraces who she is and celebrates it fearlessly. That's the kind of boundary-breaking energy we need more of in the industry.

From Trinidad & Tobago to Worldwide Fans

My family is Trini-Chinese, so I feel most culturally connected to Trinidad and Tobago, but in terms of my listeners, it would be England. My first song, “Take You There,” was really interesting because I was getting love from all over the world: Germany, the Philippines, places I wouldn’t have expected but they loved it, which I understand because “Take You There” is kind of like an island song. I had a feeling the hot countries would enjoy that, but in Germany, I was like, “Oh, okay,” but general support was definitely from London. 

With your brand being free-spirited, who would you say is the closest to your brand that you would love to collaborate with ? 

There are so many people I would love to collaborate with, but honestly, it would have to be Mase-Go or Cleo Sol. I attach myself to artists who are also free-spirited in their sound, so there are no limitations. The melodies are just crazy, and the sound is just all flowing and doing its own thing. I definitely resonate with it, so for artists who create that kind of music, it’s a yes from me. 

Social Media Hustle vs. Timeless Music: How does Loie Navigate the Viral Landscape Without Sacrificing Artistic Integrity?

100%. I think it’s really difficult for many artists because social media has become such a big part of their careers— it’s almost like the biggest part in terms of launching their careers. When I see music on Tiktok, which has now become the largest platform, if you’re speaking to any label or management, they’re like, “You need to be on Tiktok,” or they expect you to already be established on it. 

It’s interesting that a lot of the artists I look up to aren’t on it, so it’s very much a new generation thing, and I’m not sure how much I trust it in terms of longevity in the industry. Just because it hasn’t been tested and trialled long enough for me, I prefer to focus my career solely on my music in order to avoid becoming a gimmick. 

You’re going up against Jorja Smith in a singing competition, and you have two songs of your choosing to sing. What would they be?

That song is coming to mind: Whitney Houston’s “Nothing.” That’s a big tune; I can’t believe I just said Whitney; who do I think I am? And my second song would have to be something fun that I love, like Amy Winehouse’s “Stronger," because I can put a little attitude into it to make it a little sassy.
